Never in my memory has the calender looked this good. This fall is going to be one for the ages when it comes to live music, especially when it comes to touring bands. This is not to down play the mind blowing amount of local shows that will be happening as well. We want to make sure people know whats coming to town and if you aren't famaliar with some of the bands, give you a little taste of what to expect. So here are just a few of the great bands coming to town in the coming weeks and be prepared to see much more in the near future.

The Krewe du Vieux after-show at La Maison was a pretty special event this year. Park the Van Records planned an awesome showcase with Caddywhompus, The Bellys, Giant Cloud, and Jean-Eric. The highlight of the night was the impromptu march through the venue by the Noicisian Coalition and the Camel Toe Lady Steppers. Gotta love Carnival!

Jean-Eric was a special treat, pretty much reminded me of a band that Punky Brewster would put together. ( = Awesome.)

Sun Hotel releases EP

I fell in love with these guys during our last Noir Collective project where we helped combine local music with the film project, 50 People 1 Question. They've just released their latest EP, Team Spirit, and you've got to check out the song Swamp Thing.

This is a pretty young band in New Orleans, but is a combination of some pretty impressive players. You'll find the Caddywhompus kids and Gamma Ringo kids among the bunch .... check it out.

Zack Smith + NOIR Fest 3

Zack Smith, the photographer and drummer for Rotary Downs launched a project documenting the New Orleans indie rock scene on August 29 this year at Carrollton Station, and it will show at NOIR Fest 3 at the Blue Nile THIS Saturday night. Here’s a look behind the project....

I develop a fondness for a lot of the bands in the scene. Caddywhompus is incredible and the loudest smallest band you'll ever see. Giant Cloud has that oh-so-good Peekers sound that I can't ever get enough of. And Loren Murrell, Silent Cinema, and MyNameIsJohnMichael always make me melt. But the band currently on my radar is one I plan on paying a lot more attention to.

Sun Hotel is definitely worth the listen. They are a local indie band with a lot of acoustic goodness, interesting and somewhat soothing vocal interludes and some catchy lyrics..... Please class them amongst the new and good in the local scene and start taking notice.

8 Questions with... Bionica

In the first installment of what will sure to be a long series of pithy and enjoyable little questionnaires, we asked local act Bionica eight questions. Their keytarist (no shit) James Westfall took the time to answer us, doing so in a much more earnest way than we could have ever expected. We appreciate him taking time out for us, and you should return the favor by catching him and the other members of Bionica tonight at a free show at Blue Nile.


1. In nine words, who are you and what is it that you do?
Bionica is a musical collective that explores all possibilities

2. What album have you been listening to for the past week?
The Rough Mixes of the soon to be released Bionica CD.

3. Favorite venue in NOLA and why?
Snug Harbor - Snug has a long history with the city and the city's musicians. Most of the band were close to the former club owner George Brumat. (who recently passed away in 2007) George was the type of human being that gave nothing but sacrifice and integrity to the musicians and employees of Snug Harbor. It is the venue that helped start most of our careers as individual artists. Fortunately, the club continues with that same respect and dignity that George gave.

4. Favorite venue outside of NOLA and why?
There is a venue in NYC called The Stone. It was created by John Zorn as a non profit performance venue where musicians receive 100%. It is booked through different artists getting the opportunity to curate the events for their allotted time. Though Bionica has never played their yet, we encourage this project and other projects that give artists the platform to be who they are with out the overhead of business.

5. What local band aren’t enough people listening to?

6. Favorite piece of musical equipment?
The Keytar! ... (Though it just broke so the new one won't be in in time for tonight's show)

7. You hate it when people characterize your music as _____?
...No hate here.

The next month in NOLA

Hey all,

So, quietly, New Orleans has decided that over the next month the city is going to host upwards of a dozen really freaking awesome indie concerts, topped off by the ridiculous lineup Voodoo has promised. My little Google calendar, which I never figured out how to use until a week ago, has filled pretty quickly with shows I need to see over the next month.

There are consequences to this. For one, I am going to go broke. Like, really, painfully, sadly broke.

For two, these concerts have brought up huge scheduling issues. As I pointed out before, I have never had to keep a schedule, let alone had scheduling issues. I feel like Trump or someone. Tomorrow night there are two amazing shows, one at One Eyed Jack’s with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (low-fi treble pop from Brooklyn) and a great show of local favorites Giant Cloud, Caddywhompus, and Bionica at Blue Nile sponsored by, well, us. It’s been argued that Pains of Being Pure are only in town for one night, but I still feel the need to send an apology letter or something to the bands over at Blue Nile. (Is it weird that I feel I am neglecting a large group of people who have no idea who I am?)

Similar problems arise on September 30^th. I’m open to people convincing me to see one show over another.

Your Face Could Help The Scene.

New Orleans music scene is changing. According to one study NOLA has officially surpassed both NYC and Austin as the live-music capital of the world. But that's just one study. We all know New Orleans has always been one of the best places in the world for music and that's because of the bands that are working so hard and the fans who dutifully come out to support them. 

We've seen some crazy successes and heard some great local albums and attended some pretty wonderful shows in the past year. Keep this strong and help Zack Smith, a local awesome photographer/drummer, by attending the Big Rock Candy Mountain, Caddywhompus, Smiley with a Knife show this Saturday at Carrollton Station.

Zack will be shooting his 1st installment of "Rock Portraits" at the Carrollton Station show. Each image shot will be collected and printed into a large format that will become a part of New Orleans 'Rock History'.

Caddywhompus CD Release tonight @ Saturn Bar

Caddywhompus, one of the youngest and freshest bands in NOLA, is releasing their CD "EPs" (its a psuedo full length to quote them) tonight @ Saturn Bar. If you haven't had a chance to see these guys yet, do it. The album is made up of reworked and remastered versions of their first EP + 4 songs from a split cassette they released and 2 previously unreleased tracks.

And if you are sitting there thinking, "On a Monday?" Well, there is even more incentive. Not only is it Caddywhompus' CD Release, but Antenna Inn will be gracing the stage.

Still not enough? Well than The Antlers and Motel Motel will be playing as well as they tour through town on their way SXSW. If you haven't heard either of this bands, check em out cause they are going to make some noise.

Caddywhompus - EP FREE

Popping in the burned copy of Caddywhompus’ EP there is one word that comes to mind…Raw. This is not to say that the duo’s 4 songs on the EP, which are also available online for a free download, are not refined or basic in sense. Instead, the rawness comes through in that of the production of the music (recorded in their living room), the packaging (those lucy enough get a burned CD with the names of the songs handwritten on the back of the white envelope) and most importantly the attitude of the songs. This is two guys, one with a guitar and one with a set of drums, making music together who absolutely love what they are doing. With bits of shoe gaze guitars, garage rock, melodic choruses and a hint of punk, it is no wonder where they dreamt up the genre Noise Pop to classify their music. This is a record that will constantly have you moving from uncomfortable “how is making that sound” to catchy sign along to knocking you over the head with a piece of scrap metal.

“This is Where We Blaze the Nuggz” starts the album with a simple guitar opening leading to a click off that immediately transfers into rim shots and hi hat. This all builds with the volume of the guitar with addition of kick drum with a sudden explosion that is nothing short of a punch to the groin. Unsettled by LOUD guitars and vocals that you will probably have to hear 3 to 4 times to understand, the listener is dragged along to a chant of Oh ohhh Oh, Oh Ohhhh oh followed by a melodic guitar. This leads to a moment where Chris Rehm;s fingers dance around the fret board like drunk girl at her senior prom. After another melodic build that alternates from vocals to guitars the song ends a climatic thunderstorm where there are screams of “Waaa Ahhhhh Ahhhh” added to the melody. This is nothing short of what is to come.

When bands are young and looking to produce material many times ideas are taken as individual songs and the end product is a slew of mediocre drawn out songs based on simple concepts. Caddywhompus, however, does not fall victim to such a short coming. Maybe it is their youth in age (Chris, 18 and Sean, 19), not experience, but one of the cleverest parts of the album is the way that each song seems to be composed of pieces of many different songs. “Fun Times at Whiskey Bay” is the perfect example of just how they do this. The heavy intro that steps down to a very simple mid section which is then abandoned almost instantaneously for a repeat of a short version of the intro. This all leads the repetition of what could possibly be one of the best lyrics of any local band this year: “I feel safe with you, and you with me my smile spreads till I can’t see. And you, you are the earth and I am your dirt, we seem to be for what its worth.” The seamless change into “Absinthesizer” again shows the maturity of Caddywhompus. The shortest song on the EP, this is the song where they say “fuck it” and let a great idea stand on very short legs, and that it simply does.

The EP closes out with “Untitled #7408”which stands as the most radio friendly of the album. With the tightest pop structure of all the songs it moves quickly and shows that while they are willing to take risks, they also know how to step back and draw people in.

This is by far one of the most promising local bands to be playing in New Orleans right now, and with a second EP coming quickly on the heels of the first and buzz that will hopefully get people flocking to their shows, make sure you keep your eyes and ears open to what they are doing so you don’t miss a beat.
